Purcell: Complete Fantazias

Henry Purcell wrote a collection of 3, 4 and 5-part fantazias, one 6-part and one 7-part In Nomine, all in the space of several months in 1680. They represent the last music of their kind to be written in England, and although Purcell does not specify an intention for the pieces to be played on viols, they traditionally serve as the later bookend to the Golden Age of the English viol repertoire. These pieces have been an important part of Fretwork’s core repertoire over the years, and in 2009 our disc of the complete fantazias won the Gramophone award for the best Baroque instrumental recording.
