The St Magnus Festival in Orkney is a very special thing indeed: it is concentrated into a short time so performers have a chance to meet & hear each other (quite rare, this) and then the Island itself is an exceptional place. It’s easy now to understand why Peter Maxwell Davies has lived there for so long. The Cathedral is a wonderful space, a great accoustic, pinkly warm and inspiring, of perfect size & proportion. The trip to St Ninian’s, Deerness was even more remote and wonderful, a church right on the edge of the sea itself.
