Ludwig Senfl

One of The New Yorker’s Best Classical Discs of 2004
The matchless viol consort Fretwork and tenor Charles Daniels pay tribute to Ludwig Senfl, one of the first masters of German song, in compelling performances that highlight both the music’s rough-hewn energy and it’s exquisite contrapuntal craft.
Russell Platt - The New Yorker. Jan 2005
…The effect is quite wonderful. The consort of viols sounds gorgeous - rich and intense, which is a perfect match for Daniels’s bright and carefully focussed tenor voice.
The American Record Guide, Jan/Feb 2005
The English viol ensemble Fretwork, accompanied by tenor Charles Daniels, ventures successfully into the rarefied musical atmosphere of the German Reformation, exploring a world of beauty and imagination tinged intriguingly with premonitions of the Baroque. It may take a while to accustom yourself to the interior world of Senfl’s thought, but eventually his creative breadth and variety, not to mention Fretwork’s exquisite, subtly nuanced playing and Daniels’ sweet voice, will make many converts.
