In Nomine

‘This is Fretwork at their finest: historical sympathy and innovation in bounds, a fearless endeavour to plough through
the 21st century in all its noise and ugliness with these old and fragile instruments that continue to have so much to say.’

’In Nomine’ is the extraordinary story of a Gregorian chant that inspired dozens of composers in the 16th & 17th centuries, and once again today.  John Taverner used the chant, ‘Gloria tibi trinitas’ as the basis for his mass of the same name; other composers of the time found the four-part section in the Benedictus where the chant is hear in its entirety, with the words ‘Benedictus qui venit in nomine domini’ a model for further contrapuntal exploration, and using the same cantus firmus, created their own homages to Taverner’s miraculous moment of perfection.

Fretwork’s recently released disc of ‘In Nomine II’ features many of the most wonderful examples of this form, including our most recent commission from Nico Muhly. Here’s the Gramophone review in full.
