BBC Prom, 2nd September, 2013
The laureate of the lute song, John Dowland is chiefly remembered for the burnished melancholy of ‘Flow, my tears’. In the last Cadogan Hall concert of the 2013 Proms, tenor Ian Bostridge, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny and the viol consort Fretwork marked the 450th anniversary of Dowland’s birth in a programme that explores his work at its saddest, most seductive, and most light-hearted. An hour of lachrimaes, love songs and dances amid the painters (Sir John Souch), courtiers (Henry Noel) and soldiers (Captain Digorie Piper) of Elizabethan England.
